Role Overview

We are seeking a Principal Engineer to join our New Zealand Rail team. Based in Auckland or Wellington, you will lead the design and project management of a variety of rail infrastructure projects—including track renewals, depots and stabling yards, stations, and other key assets. With a strong background in track design, you will be responsible for coordinating design deliverables, integrating international inputs, and overseeing project execution.

Our portfolio ranges from bespoke design commissions to some of the largest infrastructure projects in New Zealand and globally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver assigned tasks to meet quality standards, timelines, and budget requirements
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop design solutions that meet client needs and comply with regulatory standards
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards and safety regulations, including Safety in Design principles
  • Lead the development of concept designs, technical solutions, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Ensure all work aligns with Mott MacDonald’s quality assurance procedures
  • Provide technical mentorship to team members, particularly in track design and asset management
  • Promote a “right-first-time” delivery culture and support Project Managers in achieving successful outcomes
  • Stay current with industry standards, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes

Candidate Profile

We’re looking for a flexible and motivated professional with a genuine passion for infrastructure and a desire to make a meaningful impact.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (BE/B.Tech./ME/M.Tech./MSc or equivalent)
  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2, APM PMQ) is desirable

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in the rail industry, with a focus on track infrastructure
  • Proven ability to lead and deliver track design using standard industry software (e.g., OpenRail/Bentley Rail Track, AutoCAD Civil 3D)
  • Experience preparing and reviewing technical approval documentation, including design departure from standards (DFS) for clients such as KiwiRail
  • Strong capability in producing high-quality design documentation: drawings, reports, specifications, and construction packages
  • Deep understanding of relevant New Zealand and international standards
  • Demonstrated experience in technical leadership and project team management
  • Commercial acumen with the ability to manage budgets, resources, and timelines effectively
  • Proficiency in general IT tools (Microsoft Office, SharePoint) and engineering platforms (ProjectWise, Bentley MicroStation, Autodesk)
  • Familiarity with digital delivery tools such as BIM, parametric design, and automation workflows
  • Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—with the ability to engage confidently across all levels

Desirable Skills & Competencies

  • Experience working with clients such as KiwiRail, Auckland Transport, or Greater Wellington Regional Council
  • Experience with civil and drainage design in the rail environment.
  • Prior involvement in fee proposals and tender submissions
  • Knowledge of the New Zealand rail environment
  • Chartered Engineer or Certified Project Professional status is a plus
