Mott MacDonald has been appointed to carry out detailed design of the high-pressure hydrogen network for the UK’s first proposed hydrogen village in Redcar, on the East Coast of England.
Northern Gas Networks, which transports gas across the North East, Northern Cumbria and much of Yorkshire, unveiled in May 2022 a proposal that would see the gas supply for around 2,000 homes and businesses switched from natural gas to low-carbon hydrogen in 2025.
The energy networks team at Mott MacDonald will design the high-pressure hydrogen pipelines, above-ground storage, and pressure reduction site for the scheme. The firm is also designing the above-ground process facility that will inject hydrogen into a local salt cavity to provide long-term seasonal storage and security of supply.
Redcar sits within the East Coast industrial cluster and close to established energy infrastructure, including hydrogen production and storage facilities. The proposal would see Redcar become self-sufficient, generating its own hydrogen locally, from renewable sources.
“Hydrogen must be a part of the future energy mix if the UK is to meet its net-zero objectives and we’re proud to be involved in such a pioneering project to demonstrate its feasibility as a green fuel to heat our homes,” said David Fulton, project manager and pipeline portfolio lead, Mott MacDonald. “We must act now on the climate crisis and this can’t be done without decarbonising our heat network.”
The Government’s Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is expected to make a final decision on whether the project will go ahead in 2023, once the detailed design has been completed. Northern Gas Networks estimates that, if approval is granted, hydrogen will be heating homes and business in Redcar in 2025.
The appointment is the latest in a series of projects Mott MacDonald is undertaking in and around the East Coast industrial cluster. It was announced earlier in the year that the firm would be working on onshore elements of the Northern Endurance Partnership and Net Zero Teesside carbon capture and storage projects – one of the first carbon capture, usage and storage clusters in the UK.
Delivering decarbonisation fairer and faster was the theme of Carbon Crunch 2025 in London this autumn. Keynote speaker Nigel Topping, the new chair of the Climate Change Committee, along with other speakers at the event explored why fairer matters and how going faster is critical to competitiveness.
In 2023, Mott MacDonald’s report Zero Emissions English Airports: Target Further Analysis, produced for the Department for Transport, explored the commercial feasibility of decarbonising airport operations across England.
How Port of Dover is leading the way on the drive to net zero was presented at Carbon Crunch 2025 in London and the session explored why decarbonisation strategies must be translated into tangible activities.
Government has set out a Clean Power 2030 plan to decarbonise the electricity sector. But there is more to reaching this target in a fast and fair way than just finance, technology and infrastructure, according to speakers at Carbon Crunch 2025 in London.
Mott MacDonald’s recent webinar explored how NHS organisations can utilise the Climate Adaptation Framework to design, develop and implement best-practice plans.
Energy-intensive infrastructure organisations are optimistic about the net zero transition but are calling for government support on alternative fuels and faster grid connections.
Mott MacDonald, in partnership with CAG Consultants, has been appointed by Cambridgeshire County Council to develop a comprehensive local area energy plan (LAEP), creating a roadmap for the region’s transition to a low-carbon energy system.
James Harris, group executive chair, Mott MacDonald, this week was signatory to an open letter to MPs in support of the UK governments Planning and Infrastructure Bill.
A groundbreaking major project featuring pioneering technology to protect Leeds and surrounding areas from the risk of extreme flooding is now complete following support from a joint venture partnership between Mott MacDonald and BAM Nuttall.
The HyBont Green Hydrogen Project was one of the first onshore green hydrogen projects from the UK government’s Hydrogen Allocation Round One (HAR1) funding and is a potential model project for hydrogen production in the UK.
Systems thinking enabled better stakeholder and asset owner collaboration to identify and act on shared climate risk in London.
