Overview of Role
The Account Leader Water provides the Africa Business Unit (AFR) with both strategic and operational leadership in the Water Sector. Strategically, the post-holder is responsible for implementing the Mott MacDonald Group water sector strategy in the context of the AFR business plan. Operationally, the post-holder is responsible for achieving commercial targets measured in terms of Revenue, Profit and Working Capital.

The Account Leader Water is one of four Account Leaders who together manage the Revenue of the AFR unit Consultancy Business. The individual appointed will be a member of the Unit’s Senior Management Team, will report directly to the Unit General Manager and will interact continuously with Mott MacDonald’s Global Water Sector Lead and his network. Account Leader Water must have a good overview of the water sector in Africa and the interface with both AFR and IDS.

The role will entail extensive client engagement and commercial management of water projects. The priorities in the 2018 business plan are to improving commercial performance, particularly in terms of reducing working capital, and diversifying both the client base (beyond the current South Africa and Lesotho markets) and the service offering (towards a higher proportion of advisory rather than design work). Strong engagement across Mott MacDonald Group is required in support of achieving these objectives.

Job Description

The individual appointed will be responsible for;
- Delivering the annual water sector business plan (developed with the Global Sector Leader) which sets out specific objectives, actions, resources and key deadlines for the coming year for the AFR unit. (Note that the 2018 plan is in place.)
- Establishing, managing, delivering and reporting on progress against the annual budget. (Note that the 2018 budget is established.)
- Developing strong mutually beneficial relationships with key clients and partners to position for, secure and deliver commercially successful projects in the Water sector in Africa.
- Working with the Unit Resource Manager to develop a cost-effective team which, in conjunction with wider Mott MacDonald Group resources, can deliver projects to the required standard and on time.
- Ensuring successful commercial and technical delivery of projects and bids of various sizes within the AFR Water Account.
- Ensuring AFR unit is represented and integrated in Group Water Sector activities.
- Encouraging use of Digital Technology to increase efficiency and enable effective sharing of work.
- Promotion of the Mott MacDonald global capability and brand to the market in Africa.
- Through being part of the Unit SMT, other secondary management responsibilities will be allocated as agreed with the individual appointed.

Candidate Specification

Candidate Specification
Candidates must have the following;
- Be a registered professional/chartered engineer, with a minimum BSc Engineering degree;
- Have a minimum of 15 years of experience in the Water sector with strong technical competence including experience in planning and delivering complex, multi-disciplinary projects;
- Demonstrate strong commercial management capability preferably in a consultancy environment;
- Have demonstrable customer facing skills with capability in business development and cross selling to clients;
- Be capable of strategic thinking and planning; and
- Be excellent team leaders with strong skills in communications and presentations.

In addition it is desirable that candidates;
- Have demonstrated thought leadership or innovation in the water sector;
- Are recognised as leaders in the sector; and
- Have international experience in an African context.

Key Performance Indicators
- Achieving revenue targets and long term profitable growth;
- Achieving budgeted profitability;
- Maintaining working capital at or below budgeted levels;
- Expenditure on business development and bidding activities maintained within budget;
- Increasing proportion of revenue and profit originating from outside South Africa and Lesotho;
- Reduced dependency on public sector clients;
- Increased proportion of work being at strategic advisory and feasibility stage and a lower proportion at detailed design stage;
- Increased integration of the AFR design team with global resources;
- Increased use of digital technology including standardisation and automation; and
- Visible thought leadership and raising the profile of the Mott MacDonald brand in the water sector.
