Rail systems assurance lead

Job Profile

Mott MacDonald is a multi-disciplined engineering and advisory consultancy, with a significant presence in the East Coast transportation and infrastructure realm. We have an opportunity for a systems assurance lead to join our ever expanding transportation team in central Boston and embark on one of the largest projects of its nature in the region.

Alongside our joint venture partner, Mott MacDonald has been engaged by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) to provide construction and program management services for the red line and orange line infrastructure improvements program (RL / OL program). The systems assurance lead will be a member of the knowledgeable leadership team and will be tasked with overseeing the product and safety certification process and its related activities.

Job Description

Alongside the overarching responsibility of this position, you will be tasked with:
  • Checking that the Design Build (DB) Entity properly identifies potential hazards which may endanger client's customers, employees, emergency services personnel, or the public and the systems, subsystems, and elements of the project or change which may reasonably be expected to create these hazards;
  • Supervising that the DB Entity defines the analyses, reviews, and procedures which will be used to mitigate hazards;
  • Confirming that the DB Entity determines the level of risk, analyze the severity and probability of each of the identified hazards;
  • Checking that the DB Entity establishes a process which mitigates these risks through design, safety devices, warning devices, procedures, and training;
  • Overseeing the DB entity’s development of a Safety Certifiable Items List (SCIL) which identifies the risks and the systems, subsystems, and elements of the Project or Change that are designed to mitigate the risks.
  • Overseeing and tracking the progress of the DB entity with regards to all Safety and Security Certification requirements including but not limited to the Design Criteria Conformance Checklist, Construction Specification Checklist, Required Safety & Security Testing, operational readiness requirements, and the template for the formal certification.
  • Ensuring that appropriate tests and inspections are performed to prove successful mitigation of the Safety Certifiable Items.
  • Developing a formal Safety and Security Management Plan for the project.
  • Highlighting issues to the PHM management team that require management action.
  • Compile and present all required records to MBTA’s Safety Certification Committee.

To support PHM Quality Assurance manager in QA related activities as required.

To foster a positive relationship with MBTA and the DB entity.

Produce weekly and monthly reports highlighting progress, issues and options for their resolution.

Candidate Specification

We’re looking for an individual to join our team to continue this traction and invite applications from candidates with:
  • A recognized degree in engineering or scientific discipline from an accredited college or university,
  • A professional license in an appropriate discipline from a recognized licensing board,
  • Specialized courses in transit engineering, or an appropriate engineering discipline,
  • 10+ years' experience in rail systems/systems assurance
  • Progressive work experience in transit industry, preferably in project or design engineering but may include other relevant types of engineering including startup, field engineering or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or engineering/construction firms.
