Tunnel construction manager

Job Description

Mott MacDonald, a leader in the engineering industry is seeking a tunnel construction manager to join our Tunnels team in Vancouver. You will be responsible managing construction services on behalf of our client and Mott MacDonald for design-bid-build delivery of a rail tunnel ventilation upgrade project in the Lower Mainland. The site-based position involves supervision of civil, electrical and mechanical construction elements within a shaft and tunnel environment.

You will be the lead site representative for Mott MacDonald, reporting to our office-based Project Manager, and interacting with Mott MacDonald’s design team who will provide technical and site field visits to support the design Engineer of Record (EOR) obligations.

This position will be a 15-18 month contract term and you will be working about 40-50 hours per week

In this role you will have the following responsibilities:
  • Acting as a lead team member managing the contractor’s work and owner-supplied procurement, providing construction supervision and management services, and documentation of project requirements;
  • Reviewing and monitoring contractor compliance for proposed construction safety;
  • Conducting and documenting weekly progress meetings with contractor, designer, and owner representatives;
  • Administering the construction contract;
  • Inspecting work and reviewing progress, prepare payment recommendations as well as other cost control and claim correspondence associated with the construction contract;
  • Documenting delays, claim notices, or other issues that may arise during construction;
  • Preparing regular construction progress updates, including planned construction schedules provided by the contractor;
  • Interacting with team members and assisting in coordination construction supervision work among responsible Mott MacDonald design engineers;
  • Leading or supporting specific tasks and other project staff in evaluation and preparation of construction bid documents including technical specifications, cost and schedule estimates, project risks and mitigation measures, and constructability reviews;
  • Liaising with other disciplines, professionals, clients and third parties as needed;
  • Communicating with other office, project and client staff; and
  • Performing other duties as required.

Candidate Specification

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field;
  • Approximately 15 years’ experience in construction management of heavy civil construction projects. Experience with tunnel and / or rail-based projects would be an asset;
  • Experience with claims management and resolution;
  • Experience with tunnel rehabilitations or upgrades is desirable, but not a requirement;
  • Professional Engineer registration in BC is desirable, but not a requirement;
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with or for clients and contractors;
  • Knowledge of Design-Bid-Build-Delivery for heavy civil construction projects; and
  • Necessary drive and demonstrated experience to deliver high quality results.
