Tunnelling

With recurring floods and ongoing traffic congestion having adversely impacted Kuala Lumpur’s central business district, we were consulted to help implement a solution in the form of a dual-purpose tunnel carrying both vehicles and stormwater. The 9.7km Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel – SMART – offers a single, ingenious solution: during heavy storms its road section closes while the full tunnel diverts rainwater.

Urban transport

Mott MacDonald is now providing a range of advisory services for the Kuala Lumpur’s Blue Line metro system. Following success on a number of metro systems in the region including Taiwan’s Kaohsiung Metro, we are providing technical services for the city’s new light rapid transit (LRT) system.

Also in Kuala Lumpur we worked as independent checking engineer to implement the city’s 16km monorail – the first rapid transit system based on mono-rail technology of any significant length to be built outside Japan. Our role centered on ensuring technical compliance with the operational objectives and targets set by the government.

Mott MacDonald has also been involved in transport links in the city of Putrajaya. We led detailed design of five underground stations and 10km of tunnel, including a submerged tube crossing of a lake, for a US$1.6 billion light rail transit project.

Energy

New legislation now requires all diesel fuel sold in Malaysia to be a blend of 95% mineral oil and 5% palm oil. In preparation, we are working for ExxonMobil to upgrade its Esso Port Dickson terminal at Klang Valley.

Our team engineered the first large-scale combined cycle power plant to be built outside the western hemisphere, at Paka, and the Sg Kelinchi dam and transfer tunnel.
