Dredging of the turning circle and approach channel

Dredging and reclamation

Many port facilities are constructed on reclaimed land and nearly all developments require dredging to meet navigational requirements. We have major experience in both dredging and reclamation projects and has developed adept skills in balancing the various requirements to achieve best value for money and to minimise environmental impacts.

We have undertaken various dredging and reclamation projects all over the world including Europe, Caribbean, Middle East, Asia and United Kingdom. In many cases the projects have involved associated reclamation works and in some instances the main purpose of dredging has been to provide source materials for reclamation.

Our projects include creation of new navigation channels or deepening of existing channels, port basins and vessel turning circles, trenches for tunnels and pipelines and creation of new land areas for various forms of infrastructure development. We regularly employ in-house navigational software to minimise and optimise dredging layouts. Reclamation techniques that we employ are dependent upon the type of natural materials found at the site and we have successfully employed soil replacement, soil strengthening, vertical drains and surcharging, and deep compaction techniques to provide reclaimed land of the required engineering capabilities.

Environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important and we are experienced in developing projects in consultation with environmental agencies and in using techniques that will minimise environmental impact and provide a unique sustainablesolution.

Some of our key services in dredging and reclamation projects include:

  • Feasibility studies
  • Licence applications
  • Planning and design
  • Numerical and physical modelling
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Contract documentation
  • Plant and equipment specifications
  • Budget pricing
  • Project evaluation
  • Contract supervision
  • Project monitoring and auditing
  • Expert witness
  • Dispute resolution

Recent dredging and reclamation projects include:

Isle of Man, UK – The foreshore was reclaimed for runway extension using imported marine dredged sand fill pumped ashore

Rossaveel Port, Ireland – design and supervision of rock dredging campaign to create navigational areas for new ferry terminal including reclamation of nearshore areas to provide landside operational areas

Kingston Port, Jamaica – design and construction supervision for dredging of port access channels and the formation of reclaimed areas for container port development
