Port planning

We're a leader in port development and planning and related sectors. We have provided our services to port authorities, private sector operators, and multilateral funding agencies including the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the UK’s Department for International Development, the European Investment Bank, the European Commission and commercial banks.

Our engineers have been actively engaged with port authorities in developing engineering solutions which allow existing quays, wharves and jetties to be upgraded to receive vessels larger than those for which they were originally designed.

The planning of port and marine development requires extensive studies at the front end of the project to ensure every aspect of the project has been addressed for both its commercial and technical feasibility.

We have the capability to provide all of these front end consultancy services including the following:

  • Market studies
  • Demand and traffic forecasting
  • Intermodal transport studies
  • Optioneering studies
  • Capital and operational cost determination
  • Business plan studies
  • Investment appraisal
  • Pre-feasibility and feasibility studies
  • Master planning
  • Financial economic appraisal
  • Efficiency improvement

As a multi-disciplinary consultancy, our planners can bring together expertise and experience in a number of related sectors which are essential in the context of port planning i.e. road and rail infrastructure interface and intermodal transfer, power supply and utility services, buildings and warehousing, urban planning, environmental impact and management and public private partnerships. Where appropriate, we use 3D modelling techniques as concept planning tools which are effective in resolving interfaces but also invaluable in presenting proposals to non-technical stakeholders.

Recent port planning projects undertaken by us include:

  • Cayman Islands Cruise Terminal – planning study related to PPP development of expanded cruise terminal
  • Port of Ngqura, South Africa – planning study to maximise use of existing space within existing port including provision of new dry and liquid bulk berths, bunker berth, admin craft basin, and future up-river terminals
  • Rossaveel Port, Ireland – planning study to identify maximum potential capacity of port area and strategy for future land ownership
  • St Vincent & Grenadines – masterplanning study of port facilities on the islands to inform port authority on financial and operational management of the facilities
