The Mott MacDonald-Arup joint venture is very proud and delighted that the Midfield Concourse, the newly completed airport concourse at Hong Kong International Airport, has won the Best Airport/Port Project category in Engineering News-Record's Global Best Projects Awards 2016.
Dedicated to honouring the project teams behind outstanding design and construction efforts, the awards focus on the risks and rewards – and the hurdles overcome – of designing and constructing internationally. The judges also examined safety performance, innovations, challenges and design and construction quality, with a special emphasis on the diversity of global project teams and their collaboration. They also considered how the project benefits the local community and/or the construction industry.
Opened in December 2015, the 105,000 sq m five-level concourse provides 20 aircraft parking stands, including two Code F (A380) stands. Passengers will also be connected to Terminal 1 via an extended automated people mover (APM). Numerous cutting-edge green technologies and a total of 35 green features have been incorporated in the project's design to maximise efficiency and sustainability. The concourse is expected to increase HKIA’s handling capacity by at least 10 million passengers per year.
The Mott MacDonald-Arup joint venture has provided full multidisciplinary design and construction support including structural, mechanical, electrical, and public health, airport and baggage handling systems, façade, sustainability, APM, fire, acoustics, logistics and specialist lighting. The joint venture has been supported by architect Aedas, who has worked closely with OTC Limited on the planning of the concourse.
