Mott MacDonald has appointed Mike Barker as business development director for the Asia Pacific and Australasia regions. He will be responsible for strengthening the consultancy’s position in the sectors in which it currently operates as well as identifying new market streams.
Mike is a structural engineer and has been with Mott MacDonald for over 25 years. He has worked around the world in Australia, south Asia, the Middle East and Europe and was most recently managing director of the consultancy’s India business. Mike was one of the founding members of Mott MacDonald’s global aviation team and played a major role in both the £2 billion Heathrow Terminal 5 development and Hong Kong International Airport, which featured the world’s largest single airport building when opened in 1998. He has also worked on some of the world’s most famous sporting projects. Mike headed the engineering design team responsible for the redevelopment of Wembley Stadium and while in Australia worked on the revamp of Melbourne Cricket Ground’s Great Southern Grandstand.
Mott MacDonald currently operates in the transport, energy, buildings, water, health, education and oil and gas sectors in the Asia Pacific and Australasia regions. The consultancy has been involved at Hong Kong International Airport for over 20 years and also provided mechanical and electric design and project managing building services for the Star Vista building in Singapore. Mott MacDonald is also part of an integrated team working on station design and sustainability for New Zealand’s NZ$2.86 billion Auckland City Rail Link. Additionally, the consultancy is a key player in Vietnam’s booming hydropower sector and is promoting education sector-wide policy dialogue and institutional and organisational reform through the Education Sector Analytical Capacity Development Partnership framework in Indonesia.
Mike, who will be based in Mott MacDonald’s Singapore office, commented: “I will be working closely with regional management teams to set out our business plan for the next five years. Mott MacDonald, through our expertise and the services we offer, is perfectly placed to win work on projects in the region. I will be looking at how we can maximise our current resources and winning work in new countries that are starting to develop. There are potential opportunities being offered in the Philippines, Cambodia and Myanmar where we can add value and deliver long lasting solutions to public and private clients to help realise their ambitions.”
