Mott MacDonald has appointed Simon Pierce as director of façade engineering. Simon will lead the UK façades team within the UK built environment practice.
Simon joins the firm from Eckersley O’Callaghan, where he was integral in developing the global façade team’s capability and capacity, while leading on globally recognised developments including the Skolkovo Sberbank Technopark in Moscow with Zaha Hadid Architects and the Stamford Bridge Stadium redevelopment in Fulham with Herzog and De Meuron.
Based in the central London office, Simon will be working with Clive Atkinson as part of Mott MacDonald’s 50-strong globally located façade team. Strengthening the delivery of façade services from inception to delivery, he brings an emphasis on enabling informed decisions regarding technical feasibility, commercial viability and sustainability.
“I’m a passionate advocate of weaving sustainability through all aspects of building design, particularly in respect to net-zero carbon, circularity and resilience. This approach chimes strongly with Mott MacDonald’s values and commitment to improve social outcomes through engineering. I’m excited to get started,” said Simon.
Mott MacDonald has grown its façade team since 2003 and has delivered a number of award-winning projects. Recent projects include College Road, Croydon with TIDE (the world’s tallest modular building), the new RCA campus in Battersea with Herzog and De Meuron and new underground stations for the Northern Line extension with Grimshaw Architects.
Part of the built environment team overseen by divisional manager Colin Aston, the appointment recognises the importance of façade engineering as part of Mott MacDonald’s building offer, as Colin explained: “Simon’s diverse expertise as an engineer and Clive’s experience as a façade designer will capitalise on the broader team’s building science proficiency to advance our platform for holistic building design.”
