Mott MacDonald is designing the third runway, infrastructure and concourse at the Chek Lap Kok Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) on behalf of the Hong Kong Airport Authority (HKAA). The expansion will allow 620,000 flight movements, enabling over 102 million passengers and approximately nine million tonnes of cargo to pass through the airport every year.
As lead consultant, Mott MacDonald is designing the scheme for the third passenger concourse and runway which will be created on a reclamation platform north of the existing airport island. This includes design of all associated taxiways, roads and tunnels, storm water culverts and drainage, ancillary buildings and utility services, as well as airfield systems such as aviation fuel supply, airfield ground lighting, high mast lighting, fixed ground power, communication and control systems, fire services and cable ducting systems. The consultancy will also design automated people mover and baggage handling systems for the new concourse which will provide approximately 60 bridge served stands and 40 remote stands.
Mott MacDonald has been involved in the development of HKIA since the very beginning. The consultancy set out the initial development strategy, led the design of Terminal 1, the North Satellite Concourse and the Tradeport and was also involved in the design of Terminal 2. The company is also leading the engineering feasibility and associated environmental impact assessment for the third runway system and the airport master plan 2030. Additionally, Mott MacDonald is currently working on the midfield concourse and various other associated infrastructure contracts at the airport.
KM Yeung, chairman of Mott MacDonald’s Hong Kong business, said: “Our continuing involvement on this massive development shows the strengths of Mott MacDonald in the aviation sector. This project is an excellent platform for us to demonstrate our technical excellence and continuing support of HKAA’s ambition to turn HKIA into a major aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region.”
