The Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre in Jiangsu, China, has officially opened to the public. Mott MacDonald provided multidisciplinary engineering and sustainability consultancy services to Suzhou Industrial Park Sports Industry Development Co Ltd (SIPSID) on the project.
Located within Suzhou Industrial Park, the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre is comprised of five facilities on a single campus. These are a 45,000-capacity stadium, 11,000-seater sports and entertainment arena, an international-standard swimming complex, an athletics track and training centre and retail mall and hotel.
Mott MacDonald defined the design strategy for all mechanical, electrical and public health services for the centre’s infrastructure and buildings. The consultancy also advised on energy saving and sustainable design aspects and provided analysis using building simulation techniques to support design ideas. Additionally, Mott MacDonald acted as the accredited consultant to support SIPSID and the design team to achieve LEED green building certification.
Jie Cheng, Mott MacDonald’s project manager, said: “We utilised our vast global expertise in stadia and events, with a portfolio of world-class projects including Adelaide Oval in Australia and Wembley Stadium in the UK, to add value to the Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre development.”
“Suzhou Industrial Park has been developed over the past 20 years as a joint project between the Chinese and Singaporean governments and now hosts globally recognised technology companies and automotive manufacturers. We've project managed various industrial projects in Suzhou over the years,” Jie added.
