Uzbekistan

For 20 years we have been supporting water resources development, basic education, health and power in Uzbekistan.

The €60 million World Bank-supported drainage, irrigation and wetland improvement project aims to support improving the livelihoods of over 400,000 people.

Irrigation

We were appointed to assist in improving and rehabilitating the water management system serving the South Karakalpakstan irrigated area. Through better water management, the project’s purpose was to improve the environmental and socio-economic conditions of the region.

We also provided project management and produced the Ferghana Valley study in Uzbekistan. Environmental problems such as inadequate drainage and soil and groundwater salinization were worsening from a lack of investment in maintaining irrigation and drainage systems. The main objectives were to promote sustainable agriculture production, increase employment and generate income by improving drainage, irrigation systems and water resources management.

Environment

We were granted a renewed contract by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture & Water Resources to provide advisory, design and construction supervision services on the €60M World Bank-supported drainage, irrigation and wetland improvement project.

The project aims to support improving the livelihoods of over 400,000 people, where the local economy is heavily reliant on irrigated agriculture. The project will also contribute towards protection of the Bukhara deer and other vulnerable species by providing reliable water supplies to their threatened habitat.

Mott MacDonald completed an environmental and social impact assessment and environmental and social management plan for the Surgil Gas and Petrochemical Complex project in Karakalpakstan. We helped the developer meet international environmental and social requirements to obtain financing. The gas field is located in the Aral Sea basin, a region devastated by the disappearance of the Aral Sea. These assessments will enable the development of Surgil in the most environmentally, socially and economically beneficial way possible.
