Countries world-wide aim not just to reduce pollutant emissions but also to tackle climate change. For the power industry and other energy intensive processes, we have a full capability in pollution control technologies including abatement for nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and particulates, as well as carbon capture and storage.
For the massive (9000MW, 720 mgal/d) Hassyan Power and Desalination Complex project on behalf of Dubai Electricity & Water Authority, we designed pollution control measures to comply with strict environmental limits on emissions of nitrous oxides, particulates, and carbon monoxide. We also allocated space for selective catalytic reduction to further reduce nitrous oxide emissions.
We also worked on the carbon capture demonstration project at the Longannet Power Station in Scotland. We were responsible for conceptual design and integration of design data across the development consortium, led by Scottish Power.
We protect surface and groundwater from pollution by assessing risks of harm and the need to comply with legislation; we thereby give our clients innovative solutions that minimise the need for energy- and chemical- intensive treatment.
We design pollution control measures for sea water intakes and discharges for power and desalination projects around the world. In the Arabian Gulf in particular, such as for the Shu’aiba Pumping Station sea water intake and discharge, we carried out thermal modelling of the marine flows to minimise the potential impacts.
Regulators often seek evidence that proposed releases will not cause pollution. We assisted Scottish Water Solutions and Southern Water through ecological assessment and water quality modelling and monitoring of rivers and coastal waters; in effect we helped our clients set the permit criteria which were later applied.
Most countries now legislate to prevent the release of contaminants to land, except in the form of highly engineered waste landfill sites. We help our customers design and safely manage landfill sites in accordance with local requirements, and retrofit pollution control technology to old sites. We assisted the Hong Kong Government to engineer leachate control measures into the long-established Pillar Point Valley Landfill, and thereby control pollution of groundwater and local watercourses.
When pollution control fails and pollution incidents occur, we help regulators and those affected by pollution to investigate and identify sources of pollution, take action to eliminate the cause, and take steps to remediate the pollution and restore the environment. We also advise on pollution control issues; for example, we have been helping Anglian Water in the UK model diffuse pollution sources to help improve catchment management practices.
