Meredith Bates

Technical director, transport planning
New Zealand
As transport planners, we often work years ahead of delivery, helping shape decisions that will benefit communities in the future. It’s a privilege to continue my involvement in the Northwest Busway programme as it moves into a staged implementation phase, having contributed to its development since the business case phase.

Biography

With more than two decades of experience in New Zealand and the UK, Meredith Bates has built her career around helping organisations evaluate and prioritise complex transport investments. As a transport planner and business case specialist, she brings together technical, operational and strategic considerations to shape projects from early concept development through to funding and approvals.

Since joining us in 2020, Meredith has led the development of major investment cases and strategic studies, including the Northwest Rapid Transit Investment Case (now known as the Northwest Busway) and the Auckland Motorway Strategic Plan. She is recognised for her ability to work across disciplines, translating technical evidence into clear advice that supports investment, planning and policy decisions.

A chartered member of Engineering NZ and Better Business Cases practitioner, Meredith combines strategic thinking with a practical understanding of how transport networks operate and evolve. She is particularly interested in projects that improve community connectivity, encourage sustainable travel and support long-term network performance.
