Career story

Engineering solutions through collaboration and innovation

Nan explains how working across disciplines, sharing knowledge, and embracing diverse perspectives helps deliver more positive outcomes for clients and creates opportunities for continuous growth.

Nan Hua.

What do you do at Mott MacDonald and what are you currently working on?

I am a tunnel engineer based in Southern California. My work focuses on structural design and analysis for underground infrastructure projects, including tunnels and related underground structures. I also specialize in structural fire engineering, helping clients improve the resilience and safety of underground assets. I’m currently supporting several transportation infrastructure projects while continuing to develop innovative approaches in tunnel fire engineering.

What does a typical day look like for you at Mott MacDonald, and how do you find opportunities to excel in your role?

Every day is different, which is one of the things I enjoy most about my role. A typical day may involve structural analysis, reviewing design calculations, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, participating in client meetings, and mentoring or learning from colleagues. I look for opportunities to improve designs, ask questions, and continuously expand my technical knowledge.

What opportunities have you had to grow your specialism or develop your career here?

Mott MacDonald has given me opportunities to grow both as a tunnel engineer and as a specialist in structural fire engineering. I have been able to work on technically challenging projects while collaborating with experts across different regions.

Beyond project work, I’ve also been encouraged to contribute to the wider profession through organizations such as American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Women’s Transportation Seminar (WTS), and International Chinese Transportation Professionals Association (ICTPA). Those experiences have strengthened my technical expertise, expanded my professional network, and helped me develop leadership and communication skills alongside my engineering career.

At work, how do you manage your safety and wellbeing?

I believe safety starts with planning and communication. I make sure I understand project risks before beginning any task and ask questions whenever something is unclear. For wellbeing, I try to maintain a healthy work-life balance by staying active, spending time outdoors, and taking breaks when needed to stay focused and productive.

What does it mean to you to be trusted to do brilliant things at Mott MacDonald?

Being trusted means having the opportunity to take ownership of my work while knowing that support is always available when I need it. That trust motivates me to deliver my best, continue learning, and contribute ideas that help both my team and our clients.

How do you collaborate with colleagues to achieve common goals?

Collaboration is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Every project brings together people with different expertise, and I enjoy learning from colleagues while sharing what I know.

Outside of project work, I also enjoy contributing to knowledge sharing through technical presentations and industry activities. I believe that openly exchanging ideas helps individuals grow and ultimately leads to better outcomes for our clients.

How does being part of an employee-owned business shape the way you work?

Being part of an employee-owned business creates a culture where everyone is encouraged to contribute, regardless of their role or experience. It gives me a stronger sense of ownership – not only for the work I deliver, but also for helping improve how we work together as a company.

One example is my experience participating in Our Voice. It has given me the opportunity to share ideas and feedback directly with senior leadership, while also hearing perspectives from colleagues across different regions and disciplines. That experience reinforced that employee ownership is more than a business model – it is a culture where people are genuinely listened to and where everyone’s ideas can help shape the future of the organization.

I know that my voice matters, and that keeps me motivated to stay engaged, support my colleagues, and look for opportunities to make a positive impact beyond my day-to-day project work.

How does Mott MacDonald create an environment where you feel empowered and supported?

I’ve always felt comfortable asking questions and sharing ideas, regardless of my level of experience. My colleagues are generous with their knowledge, and managers encourage continuous learning and professional development. That supportive culture gives me confidence to take on new challenges.

What advice would you give to someone looking to start their career at Mott MacDonald?

Make the most of the people around you. One of the things I’ve appreciated most at Mott MacDonald is how willing colleagues are to share their knowledge and support one another. Be curious, build relationships, and don’t hesitate to contribute your own ideas – you might be surprised by how much your perspective can add.

Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience with us?

One of the things I value most about Mott MacDonald is the people. I’ve had the opportunity to work with talented colleagues from different backgrounds who are always willing to support one another. That collaborative culture makes it an enjoyable place to work and motivates me to keep growing every day.
