Shaping a sustainable future for Aotearoa New Zealand

Our Environment and Society team is growing, and we’re looking for a Planning Consultant to join our NewZealand planning team, with a focus on the consenting of infrastructure projects.

This is an opportunity to build your planning career within a collaborative, multidisciplinary consultancy, working on projects that contribute to a more resilient, well‑planned Aotearoa.

The role

As a Planning Consultant, you’ll support the delivery of resource management planning services across a wide range of projects, working alongside experienced planners, technical specialists and project teams.

You’ll contribute to the consenting of large-cale infrastructure projects, and play an active role in delivering high‑quality planning advice that balances development, environmental outcomes and community needs. This is a delivery‑focused role with strong opportunities for learning, mentoring and career development.\

What you’ll be involved in

  • Supporting the consenting of projects across sectors such as water, transport, energy and the built environment
  • Preparing assessment of environmental effects and resource consent applications with guidance from senior planners
  • Working as part of multidisciplinary project teams, contributing planning advice into wider design and advisory outcomes
  • Engaging constructively with internal stakeholders to understand project objectives and planning considerations
  • Supporting senior and principal planners in consultation activities and stakeholder engagement where required
  • Applying Mott MacDonald’s quality, safety and environmental management standards in all work

What you’ll bring

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in planning, resource management, environmental studies or a related discipline
  • Early‑career experience (typically 2–5 years) in environmental or infrastructure planning, consulting, or a local or regional authority environment
  • Working knowledge of the NewZealand planning system and relevant legislation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to contribute to clear, well‑structured planning documentation
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to learn from others in a professional consultancy environment
  • An interest in infrastructure, environmental outcomes and sustainable development in NewZealand

Membership or progress toward NZPI accreditation is desirable but not essential.
