Job Description
We are to recruit an enthusiastic, imaginative and committed person to join our growing, world-class rail business as a Principal Track (Permanent Way) Engineer who would like to further develop their career and lead a track team in India in a supportive and multidisciplined environment focused on the UK and Ireland markets.
We are looking for an experienced Principal Track (Permanent Way) Engineer to establish and grow a Mott MacDonald Track team in India. You will help us grow and develop the team to ensure that we:
- Optimise our opportunity to secure and deliver track design works for multiple projects.
- Have competent engineers available to successfully represent Mott MacDonald on schemes.
- Provide technical mentoring and guidance to the Apprentices and Graduates for our teams in the UK, Ireland and India.
You should have excellent knowledge, understanding and experience of:
- Plain line and S&C design.
- Gauging principles.
- Track materials, componentry and drainage.
- UK health and safety requirements, standards and design acceptance and assurance in relation to construction and railways.
- Surveying techniques in a railway environment.
You will also promote Mott MacDonald’s health, safety, and well‑being policies, ensuring adherence within the team, and support the delivery of design outputs that meet the quality standards and requirements set out in our Business Management System (BMS).

Key Responsibilities:
- Your primary responsibility will be a track design lead to successfully deliver multidisciplinary projects throughout their lifecycle.
- The role is varied and responsibilities include but not limited to:
- Lead and mentor a team of engineers and designers, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Oversee all stages of track projects from conception through to completion, ensuring they meet client specifications, budgets, and timelines.
- Provide technical leadership in track design, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices.
- Engage with clients, contractors, and public agencies to understand project requirements, communicate progress, and resolve any issues that arise.
- You will serve as a technical expert, pioneering the development and application of advanced engineering concepts and strategies to address unique challenges.
- Your role will involve seeking innovative solutions in the design and implementation of various projects.
- You will lead, mentor, and oversee all team members in both technical and project management aspects to ensure successful project delivery, while also supporting their technical and professional growth.
- You will engage in internal client communication, monitor budgets for ongoing projects, participate in recruitment efforts, contribute to business development activities, and prepare fee proposals.
- You will play a key role in preserving the team's culture and fostering a positive working environment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives to develop design solutions that meet client requirements, regulatory standards and comply with industry standards and safety regulations.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with Mott MacDonald's quality standard procedures.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and new technologies.
- Provide technical support and guidance to bidding teams to secure future works.
- Contribute to the successful performance of the existing track teams around the UK and Ireland.
Candidate Specification
We are looking for a flexible and motivated professional with a genuine passion and a desire to make a difference in the world.
Academic, professional qualifications and experience:
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering Engineering.
- Minimum 12+ years of experience
- Ideally a professional member of a relevant institution (e.g. chartered or incorporated engineer with RailEI, IET, IMechE, ICE or INCOSE).
- Demonstrated experience working for an engineering consultancy within the UK rail sector.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Focus on safety and safe by design.
- Highly proficient at track alignment design.
- Proficient with OpenRail and MicroStation packages.
- Familiarity with BIM and common data environment platforms such as Bentley ProjectWise.
- Demonstrate a rounded track design experience covering a wide range of interfaces, e.g. formation design, interface with structures, stressing design, drainage design etc
- Demonstrate an understanding of Railway Group Standards and UK Company Specific Standards, e.g Network Rail/LUL including Project assurance requirements
- Proven experience in successfully leading a team and managing relationships with stakeholders.
- Experience in liaising with clients, co-professionals, and design teams.
- Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective time management and strong organisational skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills supporting collaborative working with colleagues.
- Problem-solving attitude with a high level of responsibility for assigned tasks and projects.
- Professional and respectful approach towards others.
- Experience in managing design teams of different sizes.
- Experience in drafting bid fee proposals, monitoring budget, raising an early warning notice, preparing and monitoring programmes, and ensuring delivery within time and cost constraints.
- Experience of working with UK railways clients such as Network Rail.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status of a recognised professional institution would be an advantage.
Desirable Competencies / Skills:
- Able to scope and manage gauging survey and analysis from ClearRoute (or D/Gauge Rift).
- Proficient with Autodesk products including AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
