Mott MacDonald is seeking a Senior Project Manager Rolling Stock to support a major rail program in Los Angeles, CA. This is a leadership role within our PMCM team, working directly with LA based clients on a range of vehicle‑related capital projects - including new fleet procurements, mid‑life overhauls, and modernization initiatives that support the region’s long‑term transit expansion goals.

 

This position is based on site within our downtown Los Angeles project office, integrating daily with the client and a multidisciplinary consultant team. The candidate must demonstrate strong technical knowledge of rail vehicle systems, project delivery experience, and the ability to operate in a fast‑paced, stakeholder‑driven environment.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Project Management & Technical Leadership
  • Lead the planning, development, and execution of new and rehabilitated stock programs for our clients.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all vehicle‑related matters across design, manufacturing, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Provide technical oversight of rolling stock designs, system integration, and compliance with safety regulations, , and industry standards and best practices.
  • Oversee development of fleet management strategies, including lifecycle planning, fleet replacement sequencing, and transition of retired vehicles.
  • Work closely with maintenance, operations, engineering, and infrastructure teams to ensure vehicle requirements are fully integrated into facilities, yards, and system interfaces.
  • Support reviews and input related to maintenance shop upgrades, storage facility designs, and operational modeling.
  • Collaborate with systems engineering teams to ensure compatibility with signaling communications, traction power, and platform interface requirements.
  • Contribute to program‑level tools such as risk registers, packaging strategies, and portfolio execution plans.
  • Develop and maintain data models for fleet performance, maintenance cycles, and storage capacity planning.
  • Monitor project progress and support resolution of complex technical issues with suppliers, consultants, and contractors.
  • Ensure high‑quality processes are implemented for all phases of vehicle design, manufacturing, testing and commissioning.
  • Prepare presentations, briefing papers, technical specifications, and procurement documentation.
  • Facilitate meetings, workshops, and working groups with client stakeholders and external partners.
  • Build trusted relationships with local and regional transit partners.
  • Represent Mott MacDonald at industry meetings, conferences, and technical committees.
  • Support growth of our rolling stock and rail systems practice in Southern California.

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering—or a comparable combination of technical education and hands‑on experience.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Rolling Stock Project Manager or similar senior role.
  • Demonstrated experience with transit vehicle procurement and overhaul, manufacturing oversight, systems integration, and commissioning - preferably in Light Rail or Heavy Rail.
  • Strong ability to produce and review technical specifications, reports, and engineering documentation.
  • Prior experience working with or for a transit agency, preferably in operations, maintenance, asset management, or capital project delivery.
  • Skilled in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a complex stakeholder environment.

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience, and unique skills.

 

 

The expected salary for this position is $151,000 - $180,000
