Are you interested in learning more about the world around you? Do you have an interest in or enjoy studying Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM)?
If the answer is yes, and you’d love to see how STEM subjects are applied to the real world, then our Finding Your Future work experience programme could be just the thing for you. There is a vast array of STEM careers to consider and there will be more coming in the future and probably not yet identified, and we will need a diverse range of people to be ready to do them.
Not only will a work experience placement at Mott MacDonald give you an inside look at what it’s like working for a global engineering and management consultancy, but you’ll also gain first-hand knowledge of the diverse range of career possibilities our industry has to offer.
You will be assigned a host team, who will mentor you throughout the week and answer all your questions. You will have a choice of three mini projects to complete, which will deepen your understanding of the sector and develop your employability skills. Completing the Finding Your Future work experience programme will lead to you gaining a Silver Level Industrial Cadets Award.
Anyone in years 10-13 who is interested in learning about careers in STEM, this may be the right thing for them. You do not need to know anything about the industry, just a willingness and enthusiasm to learn and make the most of the opportunity!
Our inclusive work experience is available to anyone between the ages of 14-18 who has not yet started higher education. We offer work experience in the office, however we can arrange a virtual placement, if this is required, so you do not need to be close to an office to apply.
Please check our website in the autumn for updates on the summer 2026 programme.
The 2025 work experience programme once again delivered outstanding results, and the feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive:
I just wanted to say thanks for the work experience week and the effort you made to arrange meetings with the other engineers. I really enjoyed the experience and hopefully I will get the opportunity to come back to the company in the future.Work experience student
I just wanted to say a sincere thank you for allowing me to take part in the dam design project as part of my work experience. I’m truly grateful that I was allowed to learn from professionals in such a respected company. I especially appreciated the thoughtful feedback you gave on my presentation, and even more so the personalised advice about my learning style. Having the chance to speak with various professionals from across the built environment industry was a real highlight as it gave me a much clearer picture of what a career in this field looks like.Work experience student
I'd like to thank you all for this incredible opportunity! It has truly been a great learning experience, and I have taken away a lot from this week. I've found it very interesting to experience an office environment, meet new people, and form positive work relationships. The project I selected was fascinating and really engaged my creativity and critical-thinking. I have really expanded my knowledge of engineering during this week and have discovered many possible options for jobs in an engineering career as a result of the many helpful talks provided.Work experience student
