Senior Protection & Control Engineer

Auckland or Wellington

 

Mott MacDonald is a global, employee‑owned engineering, management and development consultancy delivering complex infrastructure and energy projects around the world. In NewZealand, our Energy team supports clients across transmission, distribution, generation and renewables.

We are seeking a Senior Protection & Control Engineer to join our Auckland or Wellington offices, supporting the delivery of protection and control systems for substations and wider power systems projects.

 

Your role

You will provide technical expertise in protection and control engineering, working closely with substation, transmission and system studies teams to deliver safe and reliable power solutions.

 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Protection and control design for HV substations and power systems
  • Development and review of protection philosophies, settings and schemes
  • Preparation of design documentation, specifications and studies
  • Supporting commissioning, testing and outage planning where required
  • Coordination with clients, OEMs and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Technical review and assurance of protection designs
  • Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to capability development
  • Supporting proposals and project tenders

 

About you

You will bring:

  • A degree in electrical engineering
  • Experience in protection and control engineering within energy or power systems, and knowledge of New Zealand codes and standards
  • Familiarity with tools such as DigSILENT, ETAP, or similar
  • Knowledge of protection schemes, relays and control systems
  • Familiarity with power system standards and utility requirements
  • A structured, detail‑focused approach to technical work
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working with clients

 

Experience with transmission or distribution network protection is desirable.
