Mott MacDonald, the global engineering, management and development consultancy, has been appointed by Northern Gas Networks to deliver front-end engineering design (FEED) for East Coast Hydrogen in its network area. The move will support the development of infrastructure intended to help decarbonise industry across the North East and Yorkshire.
East Coast Hydrogen is a collaboration between Northern Gas Networks, Cadent and National Gas. The programme proposes a large-scale hydrogen transmission and distribution network connecting planned production and storage with industrial and commercial users. In Northern Gas Networks’ area, the work includes developing proposals for new and repurposed pipelines and associated above-ground infrastructure.
Mott MacDonald will provide multidisciplinary engineering, safety, project management and digital delivery services on the project. Working closely with Northern Gas Networks and project partners, the team will develop a safe, constructable and cost-informed design to support future approvals and investment decisions.
Mott MacDonald managing director of energy for Europe Claudio Tassistro said: “This appointment is an important step in turning the East Coast Hydrogen ambition into a deliverable infrastructure programme. By combining deep pipeline engineering expertise with programme management and digital capability, we will help Northern Gas Networks understand what needs to be built, manage key risks and constraints and develop a robust design that can progress safely through approvals and future investment decisions.”
East Coast Hydrogen is expected to support the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industries by connecting hydrogen supply with major industrial users, helping develop the infrastructure needed for the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy system. The FEED stage will refine design, planning and cost information. Any future construction remains subject to regulatory, planning and investment approvals.
