Job Description

 

We are seeking a Principal Bridge Engineer / Associate Bridge Engineer to join our team in Noida / Bangalore / Mumbai and take a role in the delivery of bridges and civil structures projects. These cover the full spectrum of bridge engineering from the sustainable design of new structures to the use of emerging technologies together with advanced structural analysis to solve some of the most challenging design and asset management problems. The scale of our projects ranges from small and bespoke design commissions through to some of the most significant infrastructure projects within the UK and worldwide.

As a Principal Bridge Engineer / Associate Bridge Engineer, you will work alongside experienced professionals in multi‑disciplinary teams, using industry‑standard toolsets to manage the delivery of a range of challenging and dynamic projects. You need to able to build and maintain strong relationships with both your colleagues and external clients through excellent verbal and written communication skills. You’ll provide technical guidance within your team while developing your skills and capabilities through our development and training programs.

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Manage delivery of assigned projects in accordance with quality standards, agreed timescales, and budgeted hours.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with Mott MacDonald's quality standard procedures.
  • Comply with industry standards and Health, Safety and Wellbeing regulations, embedding ‘Safe by Design’ approach in all delivered tasks.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives and develop design solutions that meet client requirements and regulatory standards.
  • Manage the technical delivery of bridge design, assessment, strengthening, and replacement schemes; prepare fee proposals; and lead or support other win‑work activities.
  • Review technical solutions and associated documentation (reports, specifications, Designer’s Risk Management documentation, H&S files, etc.).
  • Provide technical mentoring to the team and others for the key service areas delivered by Bridges & Civil Structures team.
  • Manage information workflows across multidisciplinary teams to ensure clear, timely, and effective communication.
  • Provide leadership in knowledge management and digital delivery initiatives within the team.
  • Lead, inspire and motivate people in the team to achieve high levels of performance and technical excellence.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring, identifying opportunities for professional development and progression along with specific line management responsibilities for designated direct reports.
  • Foster a culture of right first-time delivery and work with Project Managers/Principals to ensure effective project delivery.
  • Work with the Senior discipline staff and Resource Managers to proactively manage workloads undertake effective forecasting, maximise team utilisation, and allocate appropriate staff to projects or bids as agreed.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and emerging technologies, and actively drive digital initiatives within day‑to‑day project delivery.
  • As part of Global Delivery Service Centre, work closely with Lead Project Offices (LPOs) to deliver projects successfully and support business development activities.

Qualifications:

 

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering (BE/B. Tech./ME/M. Tech./ MSc or equivalent).
  • Overall, 12 to 15 years of work experience in delivery of Bridge Design and Asset Management schemes.

 

Essential Skills and Experience:

 

  • Experience in managing the delivery of bridge design, and asset management schemes in UK/Europe region.
  • Experience in leading assessment, strengthening, repair, and rehabilitation proposal development for concrete, steel, and masonry structures.
  • Experience in leading and managing the various phases of bridge design projects (e.g. optioneering, preliminary design, and detailed design stages).
  • Strong understanding of end‑to‑end workflows in delivery of asset management packages, including AiP developments, calculations and report review, liaison with Check team and TAA approval processes.
  • Awareness of information management requirements in accordance with ISO 19650 standards and contract management work processes.
  • Experience in, and a strong commitment to, the effective management of Health, Safety and Welfare, including the implementation of ‘Safe by Design’ principles.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing project QA/QC activities, ensuring adherence to the Business Management System.
  • Demonstrable experience in bridge analysis, design, and assessment, including the ability to undertake and oversee structural analysis using standard industry software such as MIDAS, LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design, SOFiSTiK, or similar.
  • Awareness of workflow processes associated with information management and documentation within Autodesk Construction Cloud/BIM 360 and Bentley ProjectWise environments.
  • Experience in managing CAD/BIM teams to support design delivery, with knowledge of CAD/BIM manuals and relevant LOI/LOD requirements associated with different phases of design projects.
  • Experience in the preparation and review of technical approval documentation for highway and railway bridge and heavy civils infrastructures.
  • Ability to deliver high‑quality design documentation, including option appraisals, drawings, calculations, reports, specifications, and construction documentation.
  • Excellent understanding of relevant standards (e.g. DMRB standards, Network Rail standards, Eurocodes and associated UK and other European National Annexes, CIRIA guide etc).
  • Strong commercial and financial awareness, with the ability to plan and monitor project programmes, budgets, and resources to ensure delivery within time and cost constraints.
  • Experience in preparing fee proposals and tender submissions is advantageous.
  • Experience of working with clients such as Network Rail, Crossrail, Transport for London (TfL), Transport for Wales (TfW), Transport Scotland, National Highways, UK Local Authorities etc.
  • General IT software skills, such as, Microsoft Office, SharePoint etc.
  • Experience with digital delivery tools and workflows, such as BIM, parametric design, and automation.
  • Ability to communicate confidently, clearly, and professionally with staff at all levels and with clients, both verbally and in writing.

 

Desirable Competencies / Skills:

 

  • Min 6 to 8 years of relevant experience leading and managing bridge design or asset management projects across the UK and Europe.
  • Knowledge of sustainable bridge and civil structure design is desirable.
  • Experience as a Project Technical Lead or Project Manager delivering mid‑scale projects is an added advantage.
  • Chartered Engineer status (ICE or IStructE or IET), or close to achieving professional accreditation, is an advantage.
