Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Active Travel England (ATE), as part of a consortium, to provide design assurance support for walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure for a third consecutive term.
Led by WSP, the consortium also includes PJA, Urban Movement, Transport for All and Loughborough University.
Under the three-year appointment, the consortium will provide technical support to ATE in its assessment of active travel schemes funded by government to assist the agency in its work to improve the quality of walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure across England.
The commission includes scheme design reviews, planning support, Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) reviews, funding bid support, development of tools and guidance, monitoring and evaluation and training activities.
The consortium was first appointed in 2022 to the shadow ATE as it became established. Since then, the consortium has provided support in the development and application of design assurance tools used to assess schemes submitted for government funding.
The appointment builds on Mott MacDonald’s wider active travel experience including design assurance, design inspections, tool development and a secondment to ATE.
We’re proud to be appointed to support Active Travel England for another three years.
Recent work for ATE has included supporting the Institute of Transport Studies at the University of Leeds to strengthen ATE’s evidence base on road safety affecting people walking, wheeling and cycling. The findings will inform future updates to scheme design and review tools, improving their effectiveness, reliability and transparency.
Lucy Millier, partner lead for Mott MacDonald’s Active Travel England commission, said: “We’re proud to be appointed to support Active Travel England for another three years, reflecting the strength of the work we’ve delivered together and the expertise and experience across our consortium. We look forward to building on that work, helping to create safer, healthier and more inclusive places for communities across England.”
