The Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) has release a new guide to nature policies, co-authored by Mott MacDonald. The publication provides a plain English summary of the multiple and fast-emerging nature policies across the UK, and advice on how enhancing nature can add value to development projects.
The legislative and investment-driven focus on nature is accelerating, with increased recognition that economies and societies depend on thriving and resilient ecosystems. However, requirements for development projects and businesses to deliver new nature targets, as well as net zero and climate resilience can be challenging and, all too often, treated seperately, leading to inefficiencies and risks to delivery.
The new guide offers a comprehensive overview of biodiversity net gain and natural capital accoutning in a practical resource that can be easily understoof and implemented by businesses and organisations of all sizes.
Julia Baker, Mott MacDonald nature services lead, chair of EIC's Nature and Biodiversity taskforce and co-author of the guide said, "We want this to really move the dial on biodiversity and development. It's a practical guide, designed to drive better understanding and implementation of biodiversity net gain, helping shift organisations from 'what' to 'how'."
Mott MacDonald specialises in the Nature-Carbon-Climate Resilience nexus, bringing these together in one consolidated approach, providing solutions for how these connections work in practice and delivering holistic and truly sustainable outcomes.
"Ultimately, the climate and biodiversity crisis means rethinking the value of nature for development," said Julia. "A nature focused approach is just one of the ways we can do this. We hope this guide acts as a springboard to help us meet the huge challenges we face."
