In 2024, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) appointed the Tram Grade Separation Projects Alliance (TGSPA) – comprising CPB Contractors, McConnell Dowell, Mott MacDonald, Arup, the DIT and sub-Alliance partner, Aurecon – to remove three congested tram level crossings and upgrade the South Road Tram Overpass to accommodate the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project Open Motorway.
The project aimed to improve safety and network reliability for commuters, less time waiting in peak-hour traffic, and provide better connectivity for trams, cyclists and pedestrians.
We played a central role in the Alliance, providing bridge and civil design expertise from initial concept and detailed design through to fabrication, assembly and installation oversight.
The $870 million project included:
As part of the TGSPA, our team:
Digital engineering management played a key role in aligning disciplines and interfaces within the integrated alliance framework. A shared digital model provided a single source of truth, supporting real-time coordination, streamlined approvals and improved engagement with stakeholders through clear visualisation of complex designs and construction challenges.
With the completion of these works, the project delivers wide-ranging benefits for tram and road users alike, including:
The TGSPA demonstrates how an alliance delivery model, underpinned by deep technical expertise and collaborative design, can unlock fast, high-impact urban transport upgrades, even in highly constrained environments.
Delivering this scale of change in such a short timeframe is an extraordinary achievement, particularly for a rail project. It speaks to the strength of our longstanding working relationships within the TGSPA design, constructor and owner organisations, and the depth of expertise across our teams. Our bridge, civil and building designers have put their heart and soul into this project. Seeing these structures in place, knowing the impact they will have on people’s everyday journeys, is incredibly rewarding.Adam Kilsby
Simon MacMull and Jon Lancaster set out five principles for successful CBTC projects that manage technical improvements alongside organisational change.
Dr Allison Stewart, general manager, Victoria, and Dan Caldwell, transport leader, Asia Pacific, New Zealand and Australia, explore the potential of bus rapid transit as a dynamic and complementary solution for modern public transport networks and strategic investments.
Mott MacDonald has been appointed to support delivery of one of two major packages for the first stage of The Wave heavy passenger rail line, as part of the CoastalTraX consortium.
The Metro Tunnel, Victoria’s largest public transport investment in decades, opened on 30 November. It is expected to create capacity for 500,000 additional passengers each week and provide better access to hospitals, universities and employment hubs.
The South Australian Government has appointed Mott MacDonald to deliver a detailed business case to transition to zero emission operations across their passenger rail network.
An alliance comprising designers Mott MacDonald, Arup and Aurecon and constructors McConnell Dowell and CPB Contractors, has been awarded the contract.
Based in Perth, John’s focus is on growing Mott MacDonald's business and increasing its involvement in major transportation projects in the west.
To address the challenges of a rapidly growing city, Sydney Metro is undertaking Australia's biggest public transport project, which will enhance connectivity and improve public spaces with vibrant transport precincts.
In the ongoing work to expand Sydney’s metro rail system, Mott MacDonald has seen its role evolve from a designer and technical advisor to a trusted delivery partner.
